Top 10 Thailand Music Festivals

Top 10 Thailand Music Festivals

I’ve just spent the last weekend at the largest music festival in Europe, Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary arts. I goevery year and this year was one of the best I’ve attended. I work as stage crew, meaning I help the bands load their equipment on and off stage and this year the big band I got to work with was Radiohead, one of my favourite bands which was a great experience.

This got me thinking about music festivals in Thailand and what it has got to offer to the fans. So I did a little research and heres a pretty good list, i’ll be trying to make it to as many as possible over the next year or so:

1. Pattaya Internation Music Festival:

This festival has been going for quite a few years now and seems really popular with the Thai youth, it appears to have a good mix of pop and rock bands. March 2012

2. Big Mountain Music Festival:

The festival website is all in Thai, but with the google translator it appears to be quite a large festival spread over 3 days in the Khao yai National Park, Isan.  Febrauary 2012

3. Pai Reggae Music Festival:

This is on Huay Tung Tao Lake in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, as the name implies it hosts worldwide reggae acts.  Last year it included the Easy Star All-Stars. January 2012

4. Ko Samui Music Festival:

On the eastern coast island of Ko Samui, this is a relatively new festival but in their first two years they have had acts such as UB40, The Wailers and Jools Holland. This is during Songkran, April 2012

5. Bangkok International Festival of Music and Dance:

A city wide festival with Classical music, Opera, theratre and Ballet.  It spread accross two months over various venues in the capital Bangkok. September-October 2011

6. Bangkok Jazz Festival:

As the name implies its a Jazz festival over a few venues in the city, the festivals website is a little old and I’m not sure if the festival ran in 2011. March.

7. Phimai festival:

Traditionl music festival in the northeastern province of Khorat, situated in a beautiful region full of old temples and ruins. End of Rainy Season.

8. Chiand Mai Music Festival:

A free festival of quality classical music in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai, with international and Thai musicians. February 2012.

9. Phuket International Blues Rock Festival:

A truly international music festival with blues rock bands from Norway, USA, Malaysia, Thailand and the UK.  Has had some great acts play over the last few years. February 2012

10. CultureOne Dance Festival:

The only outdoor dance festival in Thailand, holds events in Bangkok throughout the year and hosts some international acclaimed DJs. February 2012

Colin, I’ve never been to Glastonbury but I did drive past it last week (I heeded most of the signs warning of heavy traffic due to the festival).

Thailand has its fair share of music festivals so you won’t be lacking. But none are as grand as Glastonbury. Also, the concerts are thin on the ground. Mighty thin. So get your music fill while you can.

Btw – your css has the copy in the comment box awfully light. It’s difficult to type a comment. Not impossible, but a strain.

Thanks Catherine, that is my plan to get as much Music in as possible but i’m really looking forward to exploring the CD stalls of Thailand!

Thanks for the comment box tip, I noticed this myself yesterday and have been trying to find the relevant hex in the stylesheet, i’ll get it sorted as soon as i find it. I appreciate the comment, this is a new blog and still ironing out the little bugs!

I believe Hua Hin also has a respectable jazz festival every year. I want to say April, but I’m not 100% sure.

I think you’re right, Talen posted about this recently. I think the festival has been postponed till September.
